Where are favicons typically located?

Here is the answer. Other than browser tab, a favicon associated with a website displays on many other locations.

Favicons can appear on many locations including following.

  • Browser toolbar icons – Browser displays favicon of your website when a user opens any of your website page in desktop browser tab.

  • Browser shortcuts – Browser can create shortcuts on the new browser tab page with a site icon on both desktop computer and mobile. Edge browser names these shortcuts as quick links.

  • Desktop shortcuts – a user can create a shortcut of your website on desktop computer. Favicon of your website will display as shortcut icon.

  • Taskbar, which generally appears on the bottom of computer screen. In Edge browser, a user can click ‘Pin to taskbar’ option through ‘More tools’ for the purpose to have quick access to your webpage. Favicon of your website will display on the taskbar. In video, you can see that I have pinned ‘Google Keep’ on my Windows taskbar.

  • On mobile phones, your website favicon can appear just like an app icon when some user opens your website and click ‘Add to Home Screen’ option in mobile browser.

  • Favicon also appears as icon to bookmarks in Chrome browser or ‘favorites’ in Edge browser.

  • Favicons also appear along your webpage URL on search results page of search engine. However, to be eligible for appearing in Google search results, your website must have only one favicon which must be stable and crawlable and meet other requirements. [RD]

  • Website icon also appear in search history tiles of browser in mobile phone.

  • Previously website favicons displayed in the address bar but now browsers do not display favicons there. In the address bar browsers display a padlock icon instead of favicons. Padlock indicates to the user whether a website is using HTTPS or not.

  • Favicons also appear in browser autocomplete results when user types some query in address bar of browser.

  • Google Discover also displays website favicon along the news story.
