How to Create Background Gradient in Canva with Custom Color using Desktop

Explore the skill of creating a personalized gradient background with Canva's gradient tool. You'll discover how to modify gradient colors and position them in the corners to produce a striking contrast that highlights the foreground image. In this Canva desktop gradient tutorial, you'll also learn about using the color picker, entering color codes, achieving a gradual color fade, and adjusting gradient transparency for a more refined appearance.

Getting Started with Canva

To begin, open Canva and duplicate your existing design. This allows you to revert back to the original design if you make any mistakes during the editing process.

Selecting the Background

Next, click on the background of your design and then on the color option. You will see the current background color highlighted for easy identification. Double-click on this color to open the color options.

Adding a Custom Gradient

Under the 'document colors' section, select the "Gradient" option. Canva will automatically generate a gradient color for you. However, we want to create a unique look, so let’s customize it. Choose a vibrant yellow from the color palette, which will now appear on the right side of the design.

Positioning Your Gradient

To create an effective contrast behind the laptop image, drag the black color button to the right side of the design. By clicking the β€˜plus’ button, you can add more instances of the black color, which will help increase its area and reduce the visibility of the yellow background.

Canva provides five gradient direction options. For this project, I recommend positioning the yellow color in the top left corner to ensure that the laptop remains prominent. If you prefer to have the yellow gradient in the bottom right corner, simply move the yellow color to the extreme right side of the black color buttons.

Enhancing the Gradient

To enlarge the yellow gradient, you can add another color. Copy the hex code of the yellow color and apply it to the new color instance, placing it alongside the existing yellow. For a smoother transition, consider adding an intermediate shade, such as red.

Additional Tips for Gradient Effects

You can also adjust the transparency slider to create a transparent gradient effect if desired. Additionally, Canva allows you to use the color picker to select a color from any image, or you can manually enter your favorite hex color code to apply it as a gradient.

After completing these steps, you should see a beautifully customized gradient in the upper left corner of your design.
