Microsoft Edge Vertical Tabs – Pro Guide

Tips and guide to use vertical tabs feature in Microsoft Edge.

How to Display Tabs Vertically in Edge Browser?

By default, tabs in a window of Edge browser show in horizontal position. However, you can display them in vertical style. To activate this functionality, Tab Actions Menu button should be visible to you. You can show this button through following settings in Edge browser.

Navigation Path: Click Ellipsis or three dots … on top right of browser window to access ‘Settings and More’ (or press Alt+F) → SettingsAppearanceCustomize toolbarShow tab actions menu.

Toggle the button to turn it ON so that Tab Actions Menu buttons appears in the top left corner of the browser window.

Now click on the Tab Actions Menu and then select ‘Turn on vertical tabs’ option. You will see that all of the tabs bar has moved to left side of the screen, along with corresponding webpage titles.

I personally like this setting for the appearance of browser toolbar. It creates ample additional space on the upper border of screen, and it is also very easy to access different webpages, opened in multiple tabs.

Vertical tabs option also provides some additional benefits. For example, we are able to see complete title of any webpage, by bringing cursor on the border of pane and dragging it to right side. You can again drag the pane of vertical tabs to left side.

Vertical Tabs Consume Less Space of Browser Window

Are you worried that Vertical Tabs will occupy extra space on the left side of browser window?

No need to worry.

In fact, vertical tabs of Edge browser take less space than horizontal tabs. You only have to collapse the pane.

You can see a little arrow symbol next to Tab Actions Menu button. To hide or minimize the vertical pane, click on the arrow to collapse the pane. Collapsed pane is the ideal setting because you are still able to see the favicons of websites and secondly when you hover the mouse over the collapsed pane, it automatically expands to show you the title, website domain and more info of the webpage.

During collapsed pane, if you want to display or hide the title of a webpage on the top of screen, you can do it in settings below.

Navigation Path: Click Ellipsis or three dots … on top right of browser window to access ‘Settings and More’ (or press Alt+F) → SettingsAppearanceCustomize toolbarHide title bar while in vertical tabs.

In case, if you again want the vertical tabs pane to remain expanded, just click on the ‘Pin’ symbol, next to the Tab Actions Menu button.

Vertical Tabs setting provides a beautiful and more accessible view of the browser window in Edge browser. Tabs appear vertically on the left side whereas toolbar and address bar still appear horizontally, on the top of screen.

And above all, if you want to revert back to horizontal tabs, you can do it by just clicking the Tab Actions Menu button and select ‘Turn off vertical tabs’ option from the list.
