Change Speed of Part of Clip in Adobe Premiere Pro
There can be two scenarios for altering clip speed in Premiere Pro - changing speed of part of clip and entire clip. I will explain here the both methods.
Change Speed of Part of Video Clip in Adobe Premiere Pro
In this section, you will learn to speed up and slow down only a part or a section of the video clip.
β Watch Video Below.
Right click the clip, select βShow Clip Keyframesβ, then hover over Time Remapping and click on Speed.
Bring mouse cursor over the line and drag up to Zoom in the clip track to display more options. At the center of clip is rubber band line which controls the speed of the clip.
I will bring the playhead to exactly the specific position from where I want to speed up the part of clip. You can use arrow keys on keyboard for precise positioning. Now click the Keyframe button to add the first speed keyframe. I will move the playhead to another position and add the second keyframe where I want to play the video again at normal speed. Now I can change the speed of the specific clip section between the two keyframes. The changing peed percentage is also displayed below the video clip. 100% is the normal or original speed of the clip.
If I want to slow down the speed of the clip section, I will drag the rubber band below 100%. For example, you can set the speed of the section at 30% or 50% (half speed) of the original speed.
Before slowing it down, it is better to create a gap after the clip, to prevent it from bumping into the next clip.
8 Pro Tips for Changing Clip Speed in Premiere Pro
Pro Tip 1:
Position the mouse cursor over rubber band, then press Ctrl on keyboard and click on mouse, to quickly add speed keyframes.
Pro Tip 2:
Speed keyframe consists of two halves. For speed transition or gradual speed change, drag the left half to the left and right half to the right side, which will stretch the vertically positioned rubber band for smooth playback.
Pro Tip 3:
For better control on speed change, press Shift on keyboard, while you drag the rubber band, it will change speed by 5% increments at each motion of your mouse as you can see the changing numbers.
Pro Tip 4:
Press Alt on keyboard and click mouse (Alt-click) if you want to move a speed keyframe at some new position while in unsplit form.
Pro Tip 5:
If you click anywhere between the center of both split keyframes, a blue curve control appears on the rubber band. You can select its handles to rotate it and create a speed ramp curve. It helps to control the smoothness of the speed transition.
Pro Tip 6:
If I want to change speed only on specific - say right - side of the keyframe, then I will press Shift key while moving right half of the keyframe. Similarly, you can change speed only on left of the keyframe.
Pro Tip 7:
To freeze the video frame, bring the playhead to the required position and add a keyframe. Now press Ctrl and Alt (Option+Command on Mac) keys at once while you drag the keyframe to a point where you want to end the still frame. Letβs play it to see the freeze frame.
Pro Tip 8:
To remove the speed keyframes or turn off the time remapping effect, select Effects Control panel, then select Time Remapping and then click on the Toggle Animation button, just beside the Speed option. This action will delete all the speed keyframes of the selected clip. You can click the Toggle Animation button again to turn ON the Time Remapping. You can press Ctrl + Z to bring back the speed keyframes.
Please note that Time Remapping only changes the video speed and duration, but it does not change the speed or duration of audio part of the clip even if it is linked.
Change Speed of Entire Video Clip in Adobe Premiere Pro
β Watch Video Tutorial.
In this quick tutorial, I will demonstrate several methods to speed up and slow down the entire clip in Premiere Pro.
Method No. 1: To change speed of a single clip, Right click the clip, select Speed/Duration. In the dialogue box enter your required speed and press OK. Please remember that 100% is normal or original speed. For example, if you type here 50%, then it will reduce the clip speed by half.
Before slowing down a clip, it is better to create a gap after the clip, to prevent it from bumping into the next clip.
If you type here 200%, it will speed up the clip by two times (double speed) of the normal speed.
Method No. 2: Instead of manually entering the speed number, you can click on percentage symbol (%) and drag the mouse left or right to change the clip speed.
Please note that any change of speed will automatically make changes in length or duration of the clip. Similarly, if I increase the duration, it will slow down the speed of clip.
Method No. 3: To change the speed of multiple clips, just select all clips. Alternatively, for random clips, press Shift and select specific clips. Then right click any clip, select Speed/Duration and enter the intended speed in the dialogue box and press OK. It will change speed of multiple clips.
Method No. 4: To change only the speed of a video or audio clip but without changing the clip duration length, simply click the Link button to ungang the speed and duration. It will change only the clip speed while preserving the clip duration as same.
