Favicon is a small square-shaped graphic image (favorite icon) which provides branding identity to a website or any of its page. Website favicon also serves as a visual reminder to the user about a particular website in browser tab, bookmarks and shortcuts. Thus the favicon boosts the accessibility and appearance of your website. Some people also call it website icon, link icon, tab icon, fav icon, bookmark symbol. Squarespace calls it a browser icon.
Here, I have listed some innovative ideas and best practices for selecting the browser icon for your website. you can follow these tips to design a good fav icon for your website.
You can use your business Logo as Website Favicon as did by Facebook.
Use Icon Part of Logo as Favicon, for example, Squarespace uses only icon component of its logo as favicon.
You can the First Letter Initials of the Brand Name as Favicon, for example, Google prefers G letter as favicon. Personally, I like this favicon idea.
In my opinion, you should avoid your full brand name as favicon. However, some company websites use All Letters of Brand Name as Favicon, for example, FedEx makes this mistake.
Another idea for a favicon is using Metaphorical Symbol as Favicon, for example, our Dozro website as well as the website of Think with Google uses a light bulb 💡 icon as a browser tab icon.
Though I recommend uploading a favicon image on your website for branding and better user experience. However, you can view some examples where some top Website Lacks a Favicon.
Though this is already explained that favicon must be in square pixels but in my opinion it is necessary to include this vital suggestion here. It is because, some web designers still use favicons in non-square format - a big mistake. Therefore you should create a square favicon; for example, 96x96 or 144x144 instead of 48x192 pixels.
