Should you use All Letters of Brand Name as Favicon? Examples

I recommend you do Not use all letters of your Brand Name as Favicon on your website.

It is a bad idea to use all letters of wordmark as favicon. Favicon identity becomes so tiny which makes hard to read or identify in browser. User will less likely to find your website tab in plethora of opened tabs in browser.

Following are examples where some brands have used some or all letters of brand name as favicon. In my opinion, this is bad practice for favicon. → Watch Video Tutorial.

• Wix uses complete logo wordmark as favicon.

• Lexology uses first 3 letters of the brand ‘LEX’ as favicon.

• Dell uses all four letters as favicon.

• McKesson uses first two letters of the brand name ‘MS’ as favicon and it is okay for visibility.

• General Motors uses first two letters of the business name ‘gm’ as favicon. It also serves as its logo.

• FedEx

• FIAT

• Canon

• CNN

• BenQ

• Cisco

• Nestle

• DIGG also uses complete letters of brand name as favicon.

• Arxada is the worst example of using all wordmark letters in favicon. It uses all six letters in browser favicon which is not visible at all.

However, I do not recommend using full text part of logo as favicon due to less visibility. Use complete logo text in favicon only if the wordmark consist of only two or maximum three characters. However, I recommend using first letter or some metaphorical symbol as favicon for better branding; for example Dell can use metaphorical illustration of a laptop device as favicon.
