Facebook Cover Photo: Optimal Pixel Size, Safe Dimensions and Aspect Ratio to Ensure Responsive Display on Mobile and Desktop Screens

If your Facebook page cover is not displaying correctly, consult this guide that outlines the perfect size, dimensions, aspect ratio, and safe zones for optimal viewing on both mobile and computer screens.

Which is the optimal Size and Aspect Ratio for a Facebook Cover?

Per Facebook recommendation, a page cover photo should maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio.

By adhering to this guidance, you can create a Facebook cover image in different sizes, including common dimensions like 1280 x 720 px, 1600 x 900 px, 1640 x 924 px, and 1920 x 1080 pixels, all with a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. Yet, based on my experience, the recommended dimensions for a top-notch Facebook cover are 1640 pixels in width and 924 pixels in height.

FAQs

These are some frequently asked questions about the Facebook cover photo size.

Which section of a Facebook cover remains visible across all devices?

The yellow area highlighted in the Facebook page cover photo is the section which is always visible on all devices, aligning with Facebook's updated size requirements for cover photos. Due to its consistent visibility on both mobile devices and computer screens, this area is known as the safe zone for a Facebook cover photo. On desktops, the top and bottom sections are cropped. On mobile, the full FB banner is visible, but the bottom left corner is partially hidden by the profile picture. To verify, check your Facebook page on desktop and mobile.

Why some portion of Facebook cover is hidden?

Please be aware that there is no universal solution for Facebook page covers. Essentially, there is no single image size that will fully display without cropping on both mobile and desktop platforms at the same time.

The discrepancy arises from the distinct default containers Facebook uses for cover photos on mobile and desktop devices. A cover photo with a 16:9 aspect ratio appears fantastic on Facebook mobile, whereas the desktop container typically has a default aspect ratio of 16:6, based on my calculations.

Moreover, the default containers for profile pictures differ as well. For instance, on mobile screens, the page profile picture takes up a larger portion of the Facebook cover photo compared to its display on a computer screen.

This is the reason that I always place most important elements on this safest area of Facebook page cover because it is visible on all devices including mobile and computer screens.

Which are ideal dimensions for a Facebook cover?

Facebook Cover Size Recommendation

In my view, the ideal dimensions for a Facebook cover are 1640 x 924 pixels (width x height). This size ensures that the cover remains clear on retina and larger screens, even when in JPG format. Furthermore, the Facebook background cover will fit perfectly on all mobile devices without any cropping.

Can I use a YouTube thumbnail for my Facebook cover photo?

Is this technical jargon of pixels is difficult for you to understand?

As an easy alternative, you can use any thumbnail image of a YouTube video as cover photo for your Facebook. Because, a YouTube thumbnail is created in 1280 x 720 pixels (having 16:9 ratio), therefore, it will fit well as a Facebook cover. The only thing to remember is that, do not put important elements on the upper and lower edges of the image.

Why you recommend an unpopular size?

I know that in other copy pasted online resources, you see other recommendations including β€œ851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall” and β€œ820 pixels wide by 312 pixels tall” but in my own tests, these are not correct sizes because these lack the 16:9 aspect ratio as recommended by Facebook. In an other article, I have explained the popular wrong FB cover sizes.

I have recommended these correct sizes (16:9 aspect ratio and 1640 x 924 resolution) after my original thorough work on the Facebook cover photo.

Moreover, I am honored that the default preset for a Facebook cover photo in Microsoft Designer aligns with the dimensions recommended by Dozro.

How can I verify the accuracy of the Recommended FB Cover Size?

To verify my recommendation, you can check my Facebook cover designs, download any image and then upload it on your own Facebook page. You will see that it perfectly fits on mobile and PC layouts.

Will this size work for Facebook background cover for a personal account?

Yes. This size and aspect ratio recommendation (16:9 aspect ratio and 1640 x 924), works perfect for cover/banner image of both Facebook personal account profile as well as for cover photo of any Facebook business page.

What is Facebook cover photo size in CM and Inches?

Facebook officially recommends 16:9 aspect ratio for the background cover. Following this ratio, the best dimensions for a Facebook cover are 1640 x 924 pixels. These dimensions are precisely equal to 17.082 x 9.624 inches (width x height). If you prefer to design FB cover in centimeters then it is 43.387 cm wide and 24.445 cm tall. In millimeters, the dimensions are 433.87 x 244.45 mm.

What are the precise pixel dimensions for the safe zone on a Facebook cover photo?

As per my calculations, the precise safe zone measurements for a Facebook cover are 1640 pixels in width and 606 pixels in height (indicated in yellow). These dimensions are applicable when creating a FB cover photo with a resolution of 1640 x 924 pixels. The safe zone is positioned at the central point of the FB cover photo, both horizontally and vertically.

You can watch our demo tutorial for method of measuring exact pixels of a photo.

Is it possible to upload Facebook cover photos separately for mobile and desktop?

No. You can only upload one image for the Facebook background cover. Facebook will automatically crop it to fit on both mobile and desktop devices.

What is the recommended size for a profile picture on a Facebook page?

In my experiment, I discovered that a Facebook page profile picture appears as 200 x 200 pixels on an FHD screen (1920 x 1080 monitor). To ensure optimal display, it's recommended to design a profile picture for your Facebook page (personal or business) at least 200 square pixels. For better visibility on larger screens, consider creating it slightly larger, such as 250 x 250 pixels. If you have a profile picture for your YouTube channel sized at 800 x 800 pixels, you can confidently use it on your Facebook page since browsers can adjust its display based on the user's device.

Additionally, you may refer to the official Facebook guidelines for the recommended sizes of a profile picture and background cover; however, regrettably, that page is not very informative.
