Font weight indicates the degree of blackness or thickness of glyph strokes. Font weight is also sometimes referred as font boldness.
According to Microsoft, Weight of a variable font can be any value from 1 to 1000. [RD]
Under US Weight Class, a static font may have maximum 9 weights from 100 to 900.
Font weights are thin (100), extra light (200), light (300), normal or regular (400), medium (500), semi-bold (600), bold (700), extra bold (800) and black or heavy with 900 weights.
These nine weight values provide an ordered sequence for clarity and even difference of thickness.
The weight value of 400 is considered normal or regular, often used for body text whereas the value of 700 is considered bold, often used for display and headings.
Font weights of 100 and 200 are generally not used for website as these weights may result in accessibility issue for low vision users.
