Microsoft Edge - Expert Settings for ‘Share, copy and paste’ Option

When you go to Settings page in Microsoft Edge, there is the option of ‘Share, copy and paste’ on the left side.

This option enables the user to paste a copied link (from anywhere on the internet such as from a webpage) in either hyperlinked format or plain text into other websites and applications such as MS Word, Email app or social media apps.

Link or Plain Text: Which I have Set as Default Pasting Option in Edge?

Browser gives you two option of ‘Link’ and ‘Plain text’ for copying and pasting options of a link. You can make one as your default.

I have selected ‘Plain text’ option as default behavior of browser for links.

Don’t worry; you can choose either option as default. When you will right-click to paste a copied link, the context menu will show you both ‘Paste’ and ‘Paste as’ options. If you click paste, it will follow your default choice of either ‘Link’ or ‘Plain text’ for pasting.

However, when you right-click and select or hover over the ‘Paste as’ option, it will further show you both ‘Link’ and ‘Plain text’ options, with a ‘default’ text mentioned with an option which you can customize by clicking ‘Change default’ option.

Please remember that ‘Paste as’ options will only appear when you already have copied a link.

So, why I prefer ‘Plain text’ option?

Because browser pastes the copied link in plain text (Ctrl+Shift+V) of inactive or dead link. However, after pasting if you click space bar, the link automatically becomes live and active. It looks better option to me.

However, when you select the simple ‘Paste’ option (after right-clicking), it pastes the link wrapped by the title text or anchor text where actual link is hidden below the text. This ‘Paste’ option is the same as ‘Link’ in settings. You can also perform this paste type by clicking (Ctrl+V) on your computer keyboard.

You require these paste options most often while designing a website. You can also experience these paste options by pasting a copied link into draft of your email. However, some apps and websites may override this default function.

I also turn ON the toggle next to ‘Use the format selected above when copying links within web pages’ option.

This option also enhances the browsing experience as web browser automatically establish a preload connection with server in background for fast loading of a webpage when requested.

Copy a Link from a Specific Part of a Webpage

You can generate and copy a pointed link from a specific part of page on a website. Whenever, you will open that link in future, it will directly take you to the specific text or a part on the webpage, instead of top of the page.

It is very useful feature for getting a clickable link of specific word or line in long webpage.

To do this on any website page, select or highlight a text (even a single letter or word), then right-click and select ‘Copy link to highlight’ and the pointed link will be copied. You can paste or save it anywhere such as Google Docs, a messaging app, email, or MS Word document.
