Pro Tip: To view same autofill function on your other devices, click profile picture in Microsoft Edge (Mobile or PC), and turn ON the Sync button.

Saving and Securing Passwords in Edge Browser

Microsoft Edge browser allows you to save passwords for your accounts on multiple online websites and apps. To access the password settings in Edge Windows, please follow below track.

Click Three Dots for ‘Settings and More’ (or press Alt+F) → SettingsProfilesPasswords.

To Access the settings in Microsoft Edge mobile browser, click ‘three dots’ (…) on bottom of phone screen, Settings → click on profile photo → Passwords.

Allow or Disallow Edge Browser to Save Passwords

It is up to your own decision whether to allow browser to save your passwords or not. If you want Edge browser to save your passwords, then next to ‘Offer to save passwords’ option, turn ON the toggle button. In this case, whenever you will enter a new password on a website, a prompt will appear asking you to save the password. However, if you don’t want browser to send prompts for saving passwords, then you can turn the toggle button OFF.

Your passwords are more secure in Edge browser than manually typing your passwords each time, because during manual typing, your keyboard may be in access of someone with bad intentions.

Best Measures to Secure Your Saved Passwords in Edge Browser

Passwords page in Edge settings provides you following different options for sign-in:

  • Automatically

  • With device password

  • Prompt for the custom primary password before filling website password

You can choose ‘Automatically’ option if you are using your computer at home and there is no chance anyone else (outside of family) to sit on your computer chair. This option will not require you (or someone else with access to your computer) for any additional password. You can see your saved passwords, just by clicking the ‘eye’ symbol, on passwords page.

Obviously, you are not hiding your passwords from your family members but there is a risk that in some situation, maybe some of your relative (with bad intentions) may request you to use your computer for few minutes. So, your relative can also access or note down your passwords if you have selected the ’Automatically’ option.

Therefore, I do not recommend selecting ‘Automatically’ even for your home computer.

Temporary Lock for Your Device

If you have selected ‘Automatically’ option for sign-in in Edge settings, your passwords in web browser are exposed to anyone who has access to your computer. Imagine a situation, when you leave your computer chair for a few minutes and some guest in your home (with bad intentions), hurriedly goes to your computer seat in your absence and steal passwords for your vital business accounts.

To prevent this, before leaving your computer seat, press ‘Windows logo key + L’ to temporarily lock your computer. When you come back, you can resume your work by just unlocking your device with your device pin. To create your device pin click StartSettingsAccountsSign-in optionsWindows Hello Pin.

Scan Passwords with Passwords Monitor in Edge

Passwords Monitor can scan your passwords and display any leaked passwords. Password Health Indicator will suggest recommendations to secure weak or reused passwords.

Enter below text in Edge browser and press Enter.

edge://settings/passwords/PasswordMonitor

Click ‘Scan now’ button to scan your saved passwords.

Best Option to Secure Edge Passwords for Your Computer in Office or Shop

In your office or store, your employees may have access (even for few minutes) to your computer without your knowledge. Therefore, never use ‘Automatically’ sign-in option in Edge settings.

You should select ‘With device password’ option for signing-in. With this option applied, each time, you sign-in to an account, browser will prompt you to authorize this sign-in by entering device PIN. After entering the device PIN, browser will autofill the respective password for the website.

Additionally, if you have opted ‘With device password’ option, no one (including you) will be able to see passwords, saved in Edge browser. You will only be able to see your passwords after entering your device password.

You can create your device pin in your computer, by clicking StartSettingsAccountsSign-in optionsWindows Hello Pin.

How to Keep Passwords Secret Even from Family Members in Microsoft Edge?

In some situations, you may want to keep secret your saved passwords even from your own family members. To do this you should access your passwords page in following navigation.

Click Three Dots for ‘Settings and More’ (or press Alt+F) → SettingsProfilesPasswords.

Under sign-in options, select ‘Prompt for the custom primary password before filling website password’ option.

After selecting this option, a menu will open which will require you to create a custom primary password. Just create your password and your passwords and website accounts are best saved in Edge browser.

With this sign-in option, each time your browser will ask for this primary password for auto-filling the password. With this selection, though your family members can still access your computer and browser for opening common websites, but they will be unable to see the passwords saved in Edge browser. Your family members will also be unable to access your accounts (such as Facebook or other websites with account access) if they don’t know your primary password.

Edge Browser cannot Secure Weak Passwords

Hackers are always in search of careless people, not taking online security seriously. Online security should be your priority before opening any websites in browser. Your passwords are quite secure in Edge browser but they cannot be secured when you use those passwords to sign into other websites.

Therefore, I strongly recommend you to always create a strong, unique-to-each-account, and reasonably long password with combination of lower-case letters, upper-case letters, numbers, and symbols.

Browser can alert you when or if some of your passwords are found in online leakage. You should toggle the button ON ‘Show alerts when passwords are found in an online leak’ on passwords page in browser.

I will also recommend you turn OFF the toggle next to ‘Show the "Reveal password" button in password fields’ in settings.

Should You Save Payment Info in Edge Browser?

It is up to you whether you allow Edge browser to save and autofill your payment info or prefer to enter payment info manually each time. Please keep in mind that autofill is more secure than manual typing.

In my experience, I prefer to allow browser to save my payment info for easier auto filling later when I buy something online from a website.

Click Three Dots for ‘Settings and More’ (or press Alt+F) → SettingsProfilesPayment info.

To Access the same settings in Microsoft Edge mobile browser, click ‘three dots’ (…) on bottom of phone screen, Settings → click profile picture to access Payments settings.

Please remember that payment info is shared directly from your Microsoft account, and no one (even you) can see through the details of your saved credit cards, without some two-step verification such as device PIN.

According to Microsoft Edge documents, the payment information is encrypted locally in your device. The merchant can request user details about credit card number, credit card expiration, full name, billing and shipping address, user email, and phone number. [RD]

The payment details of the user in Microsoft account is synced across devices such as on computer or mobile phone of the user.

The credit card of the user is masked during payment autofill, until two-factor authentication, for better security.

Activate AutoFill in Edge Browser for Forms

It often becomes convenient to automatically populate your basic personal data in fields while filling out online forms – such as filling out ecommerce form for buying something online.

Click Three Dots for ‘Settings and More’ (or press Alt+F) → SettingsProfilesPersonal info.

This is a safe and efficient way for filling forms on different websites. For example, we often forget postal code or zip, however, if you have saved your basic info in Edge browser, you do not need to remember data for such form entries in future.

You can save your name, date of birth, organization, phone number, email, city, postal code, country, street address. You have the option to save some or all your basic data. You also have the option to save pre-filled form fields for your license or passport.

While filling out a form, browser will automatically populate fields for that information. However, you can edit or change info in any field entry in the form before submitting it. It makes the process of filling forms on websites easy and quick.

FAQs

Microsoft Edge is not updating my credit card details. What should I do?

If you update your credit card information, such as the expiration date and CVV, the Edge Wallet may not refresh your details; instead, it will prompt you to verify. You might also find it impossible to add a new payment method. This issue often arises when the country information associated with your device/account differs from that of your credit card. I faced a similar challenge on my desktop. To fix this, I tried editing my credit card information on a different device (my mobile phone), and I was able to successfully update the details there. Here’s how you can do it: open Microsoft Edge on your mobile, tap on your profile picture, select the payments option, and then enable the Sync feature. This will ensure that the new credit card information is updated across all your devices using the same email.
